I used to donate blood all the time when I lived in Florida. I was even a “baby blood” donator. Since moving up here to Vermont, I didn’t give until just recently. Little did I know that knowing my blood type and not minding a half hour of my time would lead to me being “twice as nice.” Just because I was new to the Vermont donation procedures, I wasn’t aware of the Double Red Blood Cell procedure. Because I was new, the girl almost passed by me. She made a comment about people being unsure of their blood type. I commented “I know my blood type.” I told her what it was and she asked if I was willing to be a double red blood cell donor. She told me it only takes about a half hour to donate it, and that the blood is “filtered” through a machine to take only the red blood cells, the rest are returned with a saline or glucose solution. I figured this would be the best idea as I wouldn’t be light-headed from getting so much blood drawn. So that’s what I did. Now I can help twice as many people as I did while I was in Florida and that inspires me to do more and to donate any time I can.
