Back in October 2009 I had underwent a surgery that had gone horribly wrong. I had to receive two units of red blood. If it were not for that I would have bled to death. As I am anemic I am not able to donate my own blood in advance for procedures and surgeries. I am so thankful and grateful for all those people who can doneate their blood because otherwise I would not be here today. Thanks.

My mom had heart surgery in Dec. and ran into all kinds of problems. Thanks to donated blood, it saved her life. Thank you to whomever saved my mom’s life, you’re an angel. People should donate blood if they can because life is amazing and you never know if you’re ever going to need blood, or some one you love does.

In 1985, my 8-year-old daughter was injured when a 16 hand high horse fell on top of her, splattering her liver and pancreas. She had less than a 10% chance of living, but due to blood transfusions, an expert team of doctors, tons of prayers, and the grace of God, she lives today. She is 37 years old and has 3 happy, healthy children, despite the fact that they told us she would never be able to have children. I have donated blood regularly since then until recently when the medication I am on made me quit. I have a testimony of the benefits of blood donation and recommend it to everyone. It only takes a few minutes of your time to save someone’s life.

When I was 17, I donated blood at my high school blood drive. I felt so excited to be able to do it (with my parents consent, of course) and was blessed to know that I could be saving someone’s life in the process. Then about 6 months after I graduated, I got into a very serious freeway chain-reaction car accident. I had no external problems/injuries but a few scraps and scratches when you looked at me. I didn’t know until after all the hospital checks were done that I had very serious liver lacerations. I lost a lot of blood, and was losing blood, as I laid on the hospital bed. I was rushed to have an angiogram and was given a few bags of blood to make up what I lost, then stayed in the hospital for the next 10 days. I am perfectly fine now after 6 years and very thankful for the people who did donate blood. I always wonder (every now and then), was one of those bags of blood my own? I don’t think I would ever know, but always remember, “What goes around, comes around.” If you do something good without expecting something back, something good will come back to you twice as good. In my case, I donated one pint of blood and got back two. It helped save my life.

She should have been saved by the transfusion. Instead she died because of it. Something noone even thought of happening. A rare transfusion reaction which made it impossible for her to breath on her own again. It affects the lung, and it’s supposed to be checked and documented from the time of donor giving until it’s given to a patient. What happened? Can someone please tell us what happened here? A 17 year old child lost her only parent and provider because of this, Shari lost her life because of this. Not because of the minor bleeding she had experienced over several months. If they could have found the bleeder before the transfusion, she could have come back home to us. Back to the people who loved and cherished her. Now, none of us have the love she gave freely. My only consolation is to know so many lives are really saved by the blood and plasma donations we give. We give life. Please don’t let this happen to anyone else. Thank you for the space and for taking time to read about our grief. There are so many more that have been helped by donations.

I feel good knowing that my blood will help somebody, somewhere. I have one of the more rare blood types, so I figure why not help with the supply. I would sure hate to know there wasn’t any to get if I needed it. It doesn’t take that long, and is not bad if you are not deathly scared of needles or blood.

I was a blood donor until 1993, when I was told I could not donate because I had lived in England for more than six months (around the time of the “mad cow epidemic”). Recently, our daughter underwent her 4th surgery for Hirschsprung’s disease, and suffered complications as a result. She needed a transfusion, and because of an anonymous donor, she was able to recover fully. To everyone who takes the time to give of themselves and donate, this family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.

I was a late bloomer in college, I didn’t start until I was 45-years old. A science professor offered 10% of our grades if we became blood doners, extra points are great in college. I went down and volunteered, this became a habit for me, not because of the points, but how good I felt after doing so. I graduated from college in 1995 after 7 years of college and blood donations. This became one of the best habits I ever aquired. Due to my example and pushing, when my children became old enough to donate, I had their sleeves rolled up too. I have 3 gallon pins to my credit. I am also an organ doner. Due to the illness of Crohns and the medication I am currently taking, I can no longer donate. Donating blood was one of the best things I feel I could have ever done for myself and other people. I am proud when I put on my pins. It is a good thing and the 10% in collage has turned into 100% satisfaction.
